I'm married to a Spanish/Mexican from Texas.  He's been in the islands for about 20 years now but when he tries to talk pigeon, or use local slangs, it just doesn't sound right.  There's still that Texas twang in there, it's so funny.  And you're right about teaching them to ignore what your mother says sometimes. ~ Pearl Daimaru-Orozco

We were at a big party. Out of deference, every young person we saw would address us as aunty and uncle. My husband, new to Hawaii and to marriage, asked "exactly how many nieces and nephews do we have?" ~La Rena Saul

When I visited my in-laws on the mainland, the relatives commented how "Japanese" my babies looked.  When I took my babies to Japan, the Japanese people told me how "gaijin" they looked.  ~ Gwen Henry, Wailuku
