We had a party at our house
and you know how in Hawaii, you put all the food on a table and its
buffet style and then you go sit wherever - in front of the TV or in the
living room at the low card table and talk story. His family
managed to squeeze 10 people around the table and have a formal meal.
My family sat in the living room on the floor. ~K |

We usually go home twice a year to Maui. The first
time he came home with me, he was shocked that our family get
togethers took place in the garage with old picnic tables with rolled
paper tablecloths and plastic chairs (with names on them) and lots of
local food instead of in the house with everyone sitting at the
table. Occasionally, we'd have something weird on the table like a
pig's head that we just rotisseried. He almost grossed out when all
my cousins started picking at the skin. He also still can't get used
to the idea that when you greet people at a party, you have to go
around and kiss everybody hello. When it's time to leave, it takes
about 2 hours to say goodbye. ~ Christine Johnson |

My father-in-law expressed his extreme
disappointment in being served kalua pig. He said that he expected to
have some nice slices of pork but instead was served a pile of what
looked like garbage! ~ Andrea |
