I
am the Haole in our family. Thank you all for including *haole wives* in
your club!!!! I was divorced with a three year old Hapa daughter
(Hawaiian, Chinese, Haole) when I met my future-husband-to-be. He is
local-Japanese. We have been married for almost 20 years. We had
been seeing each other for eight months when I thought I could make a
great impression on his Mother and Father and his two sons by cooking a
"traditional" Thanksgiving dinner. ( He was also divorced......I had met
his Mother and Father and sons and we had many fun times already.) After
many hours of chopping, dicing, stirring, cook, cook, cook.......all was
ready for our Thanksgiving feast!!! The table was set with china
and silverware and crystal....and candles on the best /only linen
tablecloth I had.........there was lovely music in the
background......... I showered and dressed in my nicest outfit ......The
turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, corn, cranberry sauce, etc.........everything
was PERFECT!!!! ALL homemade with the freshest of ingredients.
We all sat down at the perfectly arranged dining room table........We
said our blessing.....the turkey was carved, the various dishes were
passed around......"where's the rice?" "no sushi?" They loaded their
plates anyway and went to the family room to watch football !!!!! I did
not 'get-it'.........but, I have made rice for dinner every day
since!!!! |

| I was in the waiting room at
the doctors office, I was the only one in the room. The nurse came into
the room and called out "Mrs. Suzuki," she looked around the room,
scanning the area for a black haired woman, when she realized I was the
only person in the room, she quizzically asked "Mrs. Suzuki?" I said
"yes that's me." |

My husband and I (just celebrated 20
years!) are the opposite composition of your charter Haole Hubby Club
members - I'm the tall, blonde Haole and he's the local Japanese. We
have one, 13-year old Hapa Baby.
We met and dated on the mainland for
several years before I finally made my first trip to Hawaii with him
and stayed with his family. The very first evening after we arrived on
the killer 7-hour flight, the entire extended family met at his
aunty's and uncle's place for dinner to see the haole girl that number
one son had brought home. I still remember the first thing that came
out of his uncle's mouth upon seeing me for the first time, "Denis!
You neva say how tall she is!"
My own family in Texas had some
adjustments, too. At the first family reunion we attended after being
married for a short time, my cousin's young daughter came close to us
with a secret to share, "You know you two don't match, don't you?"
